More robot gymnastic feats

August 4, 2013

Mad robot builder Hinamitetu has been at it once again.  This week he posted not one, but two new feats of robot gymnastics to his YouTube channel.  First, check out this double front flip from Robot No. 16 — and as we all expect by now, it sticks the landing perfectly:

Then check out this one, where the robot performs a Kovacs:

What the heck’s a Kovacs, you ask?  Apparently it’s a particularly challenging type of bar release, which the intergoogles fail to clearly define (but you can read this snarky history to learn a little about it).

What is clear is that robot gymnastics is advancing by leaps and bounds, and Hinamitetu is at the forefront.  I can’t wait to see him start stringing some of these skills together into a routine.  At some point, we should see robot gymnastic competitions, and those should be a lot of fun to watch.

It’s not going to be easy for other builders to catch up, though.  For some perspective, see this post showing Robot 6 attempting the same skill, three years ago.
